Overweight Dogs - Is Your Dog
Too Fat?
Is Your Dog Fat
Is your dog getting a bit overweight? Do you constantly slip
him table scraps or toss him a few extra doggie treats to make up for all the
time that you spend away from home? If this is the case, you might want to think
twice about the effects all of this is going to have on your dog’s health.
Maybe your dog just isn’t getting enough exercise to keep him slim and trim
because there isn’t enough time in the day to get to it on a daily basis.
Perhaps your dog already has a health condition that prevents him from taking
those long walks that he used to enjoy in his younger days. If this is the case,
you need to find an alternative plan.
Even if the need to curtail your dog’s diet makes you feel uncomfortable, you
need to take into consideration the best interests of your pet. A fat dog is not
going to stay a healthy dog for long. Therefore, slim him down and take his name
off the ranks of obese dogs.
Change his diet to a healthier one that will have him slimming down to his ideal
weight in no time. Rather than restrict his diet by feeding him less, purchase a
special formula of dog food that is designed to provide fewer calories while
still maintaining good nutrition. Incorporate this change in his diet gradually
to avoid constipation or other stomach upsets. Keep an eye on your pet’s
digestive and elimination processes in an effort to catch any problems before
they become too severe.
Special diets typically include the same volume or bulk so that your dog’s
hunger is satisfied while cutting back on the unneeded calories. It can take up
to several months before your dog reaches his ideal weight, depending on the
level of his obesity in the first place. Taking your pet to the veterinarian for
a full check up is also a good idea before starting a new regimen for eating.
The lower caloric intake can be coupled with a reduction in the number of doggie
treats and table scraps to hasten the weight loss. After all, it isn’t only
humans that have a tendency to eat what’s not good for them. Dogs have a
reputation for being willing to eat anything and everything that makes an
appearance.
