Dog-Friendly Nachos Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Plain, unsalted tortilla chips: You can make these at home by cutting tortillas into triangles and baking them without any oil or salt until they’re crisp.
  • Shredded cooked chicken: Make sure it’s cooked without any harmful seasonings or oils.
  • Diced vegetables: Choose dog-safe options like bell peppers (any color, without the seeds), cucumbers, and carrots.
  • Low-fat cheese: A sprinkle of grated mozzarella or cheddar, but keep it minimal as some dogs can be sensitive to lactose.
  • Unsalted chicken broth or plain yogurt: To drizzle over the top as a sauce.

Instructions:

Prepare the Chips:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Make the tortilla chips if not using store-bought. Cut plain tortillas into small chip-sized triangles, spread them on a baking sheet, and bake for 10-15 minutes or until crispy.

Assemble the Nachos:

  1. Layer the chips: Spread the homemade or unsalted store-bought tortilla chips in a single layer on a baking tray or oven-safe dish.
  2. Add the chicken: Sprinkle the shredded cooked chicken evenly over the chips.
  3. Add vegetables: Scatter your diced vegetables over the chicken.
  4. Sprinkle cheese: Lightly sprinkle a small amount of low-fat cheese over the top. Remember, less is more when it comes to cheese and dogs.

Bake:

  1. Bake the nachos: Put the tray back in the oven and bake just until the cheese has melted, about 5-7 minutes.

Add a Dog-Safe “Sauce”:

  1. Drizzle a sauce: Once the nachos are out of the oven, drizzle a little unsalted chicken broth or a few dollops of plain yogurt over the top to add moisture and flavor.

Serve:

  1. Cool completely: Ensure the nachos cool to a safe temperature before serving to your dog.
  2. Portion control: Serve a small amount to see how your pet reacts, especially if they’re not used to some of the ingredients.

Tips:

  • Always supervise your dog when introducing new foods to ensure they do not have an allergic reaction.
  • Keep portions small and consider this more of a treat rather than a meal replacement.

These dog-friendly nachos provide a fantastic way to include your dog in a snack time fun without compromising their health. Enjoy preparing this delightful treat for your furry friend!
