For Deborah, writing about dogs and cats did not begin as a carefully chosen publishing niche. Animals have simply always been part of her life.
She grew up in the country surrounded by dogs, cats and horses and has been a dog owner throughout her life. Among the dogs she has owned and loved are a German Shepherd, two Chihuahuas, a Bichon Frise, a Collie–Shepherd mixed breed, and a Bichon Frise–Cocker Spaniel mix.
Living with dogs of very different sizes, backgrounds and personalities has given Deborah an enduring appreciation for something that guides the philosophy behind Dogs Central: choosing a dog should never be based on appearance alone. A successful match depends on understanding the individual dog and the realities of living with the breed—from temperament and exercise to training, grooming, health, cost and family compatibility.
From Journalism to Online Publishing
Deborah studied broadcast journalism at Mount Royal College (now Mount Royal University) in Calgary from 1993 to 1995. She subsequently worked in broadcasting and later became the creative director for a telecommunications company.
That combination of journalism, communications and creative work proved to be a natural foundation for the emerging world of internet publishing. As the web began changing the way people found information, Deborah moved into online writing, website development and publishing.
Her journalism background continues to influence the way she approaches pet content today: begin with the questions readers are actually asking, research the subject carefully, explain complicated information clearly, and create something genuinely useful rather than writing simply to fill a page.
More Than 25 Years of Pet Publishing
Deborah began publishing pet information online in 2000 with Pet-Net.net. Dogs Central followed in 2002.
That means her work in online pet publishing stretches back to an era when many households were still connecting to the internet through dial-up modems and today’s enormous ecosystem of pet websites, social media groups and online adoption resources barely existed.
Over the years, Deborah has written and published extensive content about dogs and cats, including breed information, responsible pet ownership, care, behavior, adoption and rehoming. Her work has evolved alongside the internet, but the central purpose has remained remarkably consistent: helping people make better-informed decisions for the animals who share their lives.
Why Dogs Central Exists
Dogs Central is being developed as a practical, in-depth resource for people who love small dogs—or are trying to decide whether a particular small breed belongs in their life.
Deborah’s goal is not to produce interchangeable breed summaries. Dogs can share a size category while being remarkably different companions. A Chihuahua, Bichon Frise, Miniature Pinscher and Italian Greyhound may all be small dogs, but their personalities, sensitivities, training needs, exercise requirements and ideal homes can be worlds apart.

Years of Working With Dog and Cat Breeders
In addition to operating her own pet websites, Deborah has worked as a webmaster and content writer for numerous dog and cat breeders over the years. That work involved designing breeder websites and creating the written content used to explain breeds, breeding programs and the animals being raised.
The experience helped reinforce the importance of responsible breeding, appropriate health testing, early puppy socialization, honest communication with prospective owners and thoughtful matching between puppies and homes.
Dogs Central does not believe that finding a puppy should simply mean searching for the nearest or cheapest puppy advertised online.
